Research supports the use of various approaches to reading instruction.  "Because reading and writing are complex and children and teachers are different, there can be no one best way to teach reading and writing." * Phonics, sight words, "Whole Language"; everything has its place and its values.  Through the "Word Family" list you'll find lots and lots of rhyming words for your child to practice.  The "Basic Sight Word List" will help your child recognize those words that we see all the time but may not follow the rules.

Fairy Tale Unit
Picture Book Bibliography.  In my classroom, a child reads aloud to us each day.  I encourage them to use simple picture books.  "When children struggle with the material they are reading, they cannot apply the strategies that good readers use and do not develop the habits and attitudes that good readers do."*
"Between the Lions" (PBS) link. They have great songs and movie clips.  My class especially enjoy "When Two Vowels go Walking".
